67 people representing 53 teams participated in the Summer Doubles Squash Tournament at the Evergreen Squash Club, July 13- 18, attracting players from as far away as Edmonton and Toronto. Numbers were down from last year as a couple of dozen regulars were out of town or injured.
None-the-less the event was a great success. The sun was shining all week; but, not too hot — so we received no complaints requesting to play on the air conditioned courts at the Van Lawn & Hollyburn Country Club, rather than at Evergreen.
Some of the highlights include:
The "Dream Team" of Jason Giuffre and Mike Leckie going down in flames to a couple of old guys in the Men's Open final. Tim Martin and Mark Heaney were just happy to be in the finals; but, pulled off the major upset, 15-14 in the 4th. Comparisons have been made to the US Olympic Hockey Team's "Miracle on Ice" upset.
Also, the last minute pairing of Ryan Herden and Vanessa Van Hove in the Mixed Open. They were unseeded, and made it through 4 rounds before losing in the final to the top seeds, Tim Martin & Cathy Covernton in 5. I think Vanessa was really happy Rob Pacey had to pullout. Great effort guys!
Another note worthy event was watching Penny Wedd play after retiring over 5 years ago. She came to play and got better in each round. Though taking home little hardware, she was a consolation finalist, with Connie LeBrun, in the Women's Open event, and, consolation winner, with Adam Jinks, in the Mixed Open event. She looked great out there. Maybe we will see a come back. We can only hope.
A big hand to all those that helped out, especially my co-chair Monica Beaumont. Among other things, she organized a great barbeque on Friday night that included marinated boneless chicken, salmon, assortment of salads and of course, Freybe smokies. Monica & her beau, Charles Bristow, also hosted another stellar house party on Saturday night. Rick Kochanski was another stand out, creating the online entry, updating the draws each day on the Evergreen website, and taking care of all reporting.
Thanks to the Hollyburn Country Club, & Vancouver Lawn & Tennis for donating their courts. Without them we could not run this tournament.
Also thanks to our sponsors, Freybe Sausage and Capilano Suspension Bridge.
Full results available on-line.
Thanks and looking forward to seeing everyone next year!
