Tournament Chair's Summary
of the 2009 Evergreen Summer Doubles
July 14 – 19, 2009
Another exciting and record breaking week of squash at the
Evergreen Summer Doubles Tournament, July 14 to 19th. For the
first time over 100 people representing 72 teams participated
in 9 different divisions!! At this rate and each year reaching
new levels of participation there's talk of capping the number
of entries. We had entries from as far away as Toronto,
San Francisco, Portland and Calgary.
The Women's Open was won (yet again) by local favorite
Sue Kaffka and Karen Levine, who has
just recently returned to Vancouver from New York. They beat
Cathy Covernton & Annette Henwood
in the finals. On the Men's side, Jason Giuffre and
Ryan Herden beat Mike Leckie &
Jason Del Vicario in a 3-1 convincing style.
The Mixed finals had Kirsteen Burton &
Jeff Anderson from Toronto — who won the Mixed
Division 2 last year — raise their game and beat the number
3 seeds first round and then in the semis beat the number 2 seeds
of Mike Leckie & Kelsey Parsons 3-2
in come-from-behind fashion before losing in the finals to
Tim Martin & Cathy Covernton 3-1.
Nice work!!
Another success story was the rookie, 18 year old Robert Johnson,
playing with his dad Kevin and winning the Mens Division One
in grand style, 3-2 in the finals, over Kevin Gillett
and Jim Miller. Incredible finish to a very successful
first season for Robert. Well done!!
Full results are posted under the Draw tab.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank a number of people
for making this one of our finest events. First of all, to thank
Monica Beaumont who did a fantastic job as my assistant
and organizing the Friday night barbeque and, along with her husband
Charles Bristow, hosting the Saturday night house party.
Both events were stellar and I couldn't have got through the week
without Monica (and Charles pitching in too) being there especially
on Wednesday, Friday & Sunday. I would also like to thank
Rick Kochanski for all the work he put in with organizing
the website and designing the online entry system; his work makes my
job a lot easier. Also Richard & Lynn Dustan for doing
another great job with the Grouse Grind Challenge in honour of
Denis Fontaine, which was also a record in participation.
I would also like to thank Doug Buchanan who organized
the souvenirs and, despite the cancellation of the golf challenge,
still put in a lot of time and effort to try and make it work. I hope
the interest is there for next year as it is a great addition to this
tournament. A thanks to Lynn Broman for getting the message
out to everyone and Marv Mizinski, of squash BC, for helping
with seedings and providing the balls.
A special thank you to our sponsors: Sue Kaffka and the
Capilano Suspension Bridge for their kind donation of tickets;
and Don Smerch / Freybe Sausage for helping out
once again with product for our Thursday and Friday night barbeque.
Last but not least I would like to thank the Hollyburn Country Club
and Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club for donating
their courts for this event.
And a thank you to all participants for making this our
most successful summer event ever!
