Summary & Results
of the 2008 Evergreen Summer Doubles
Talk about pressure.
It isn't easy playing with the number 1 doubles player
in the world. And when Viktor Berg plays in an event
outside of the pro circuit he never loses, regardless of
who he plays with. So you can understand how
Doug Buchanan felt in his semi-final match, playing
with Viktor and facing match ball, down 11–14, in the fifth
to Barry Gifford and Mark Heaney —
serious pressure!! Fortunately (though very
unfortunate from my perspective!) they prevailed, surviving
3 match balls and winning in over-points (3–1). They then
went on to beat Jason Giuffre and Pepe Martinez
3–1 in the final. There is no question that Viktor is a
treat to watch (let alone play against him), but my hats
off to Doug for hanging in there.
That said, another Evergreen Summer Doubles Event has
come and gone. A record 82 participated from all over —
Mexico City, New York, San Francisco, Portland, Calgary,
Toronto and Richmond. The tournament keeps growing!
On the Women's side, top seeds local extraordinaire,
Cathy Covernton, and number 1 ranked women's player
in Canada, Melanie Jans, out played, local favourite,
Sue Kaffka, and, our favourite New Yorker,
Karen Levine 3–0. Melanie also won the Mixed Open
with Mike Leckie by beating, her Women's partner,
Cathy Covernton, and Tim Martin 3–2 in the
finals. It is great to see the a player the calibre of
Melanie playing doubles.

Heptathlon, Volunteers & Sponsors
Actually the Doubles Squash was only part of the fun this weekend. The list of activities is growing and only a few can survive the whole package of events called the Heptathlon. This includes:
- Doubles Squash Event 1
- Doubles Squash Event 2
- Friday Morning Golf Challenge at Northlands
- Thursday Night Grouse Grind Challenge
- Friday Night BBQ
- Saturday Night House Party
- Sunday Wine & Cheese Party
Only 2 managed to survive all these gruelling tests of stamina: Charles Bristow and Annette Henwood.
I would also like to thank the volunteers:
Doug Buchanan — organizing the Golf Tournament and arranging the souvenirs;
Richard Dustan & Lynn Dustan — organizing the Grouse Grind Challenge and helped with sponsorship;
Tim Martin & Richard Martin — helping with the bar & registration desk, and sponsored the power drink;
Charles Bristow & Monica Beaumont — for hosting the fantastic house party Saturday night;
Marvin Mizinski — helping with the draws;
Lynn Broman — emailer extraordinaire;
Rick Kochanski — setting up the online entry system; and
Scott Sibley for organizing the Delaney's sponsorship.
I would, also, like to thank the sponsors,
Sue Kaffka and the Capilano Suspension Bridge,
Delaneys, Freybe Sausage, Dakine,
Grouse Mountain, Ryders Eyewear, Squash BC,
and the Hollyburn Country Club &
Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club for the use of their courts.
Thanks all and enjoy the rest of your summer!
