2008 Evergreen International Tournament

This year's event saw a number of "firsts"

  • The first time the tournament was held during the month of March.
  • The first time we didn't have a single entry from a South African team (originators of the tournament).
  • The first time the tournament ran on time. (Thanks to all participants!)
  • The first time the finals were finished before they were to start! (Both teams were present and keen to finish — more time to spend preparing the gourmet meals).

We also had many new players participating, The Walker Clan, 5 newbies! Many new players on existing teams, even a wholesale nationality change Team India. Besides the absence of South African teams we also missed heavy's like Swanada, and The English Roses. Many players were out with injuries, and many had family duties and/or were away for the spring long weekend.

Regardless, the die-hards and the newbies had a great tournament. New faces on the doubles court with hilarious results. When one team was obviously outclassed, the other team would make it interesting and even challenging. (The International spirit!)

A singles game of note: Men's A player against Women's C with a handicap of 9 points! and American scoring to 11. Everyone was rooting for the underdog (even the male's teammates).

The main event – Dinner – was another astounding success. Many believe this tournament is not about squash, but, about food. The appies were plentiful and delicious. The main course as varied and ethnic as usual. This year we even had a prize category for the best Salad.

Helen Chow, The Mistress of Deserts, once again produced a scrumptious desert and took the No. 1 spot, in spite of a challenge to upstage her reign!!

It was wonderful to see the effort many teams made with the table decorations, I've already heard murmurs of teams planning next year's decorations. The newly formed The Vipors took first place with an African Theme.

The Isle of Bad Manners, with some new members, were suitably obnoxious and started the Joke Off with hilarious results. Every table stepped up to the plate and told at least one joke. We had to put a sock in Kevin Gillett's mouth, or he would still be holding the floor!

All in all, the tournament was very successful. The Polish Swim Team defeated the British Bulldogs for the honour of organizing next year's event.

During my thank you's at the dinner, I forgot to thank all the people in the background:

  • Team India, who helped with the table set-up,
  • Jolanta MacConnachie who dragged herself out of bed on Saturday morning to provide us with delicious fruits and muffins for breakfast,
  • many other people who helped man the bar, clean up etc.

Without all of you we would not have had the success we enjoyed. THANK YOU ALL!

I would also like to mention that The Racket Shack (Lonsdale and Third) once again came through as sponsors for the balls. Many thanks.
