And the Winner Is…
2009.11.23 18:47
As an initiative to encourage members to renew before August 31, and to do so by cheque, we created a draw for $500 for one lucky renewal. This initiative was successful in achieving both a higher rate of return, and more cheques than credit cards (saving the club money).
At the last board meeting, 165 names were put into the barrel, and the name selected was Mustaq Pirani.
It isn't noted in the minutes, but we actually had a brief discussion as we were concerned that members would think this was a fix, given that the prize went to such a great supporter of squash at the club! We learned our lesson and next time we'll call the UN to monitor the draw…
Congratulations Mustaq!

2009.09.24 10:51
After a 5th place finish at the 2009 World Championships several athletes
will be moving on from the junior women's squad. Laura Gemmell (Toronto,
ON), Samantha Cornett (Ottawa, ON), Jaime Laird (Calgary, AB), Nikki Todd
(Regina, SK) and Rebecca Lau (Toronto, ON) are now too old for the 2011
World Championships and have thus left the squad.
The vacancies have been
filled by Rachel Au (Vancouver, BC), Nicole Bunyan (Victoria, BC), Avril
Cross (Victoria, BC), Abby Foster (North Vancouver, BC) and Hollie Naughton
(Oakville, ON). Michelle Gemmell (Toronto, ON), Danielle Letourneau
(Calgary, AB), Jennifer Pelletier (Richmond Hill, ON), and Alix Younger
(Winnipeg, MB) are all returning to the squad for 2009/2010. Pelletier and
Letourneau were members of the 2009 World Championships team in Chennai,
India.
Glenn Stark has stepped down from his junior women's coach position after 8
years and Squash Canada is currently in the process off advertising for a
new junior women's national squad coach.

Tango in Toronto
2009.06.02 08:23
"Can squash break through in the brutal racket of mass entertainment?" 1
Gary Waite and a group of fellow players are hoping that doubles can do just that.
To that end, Gary had an exhibition match, at the Badminton & Racquet Club in Toronto,
filmed by a professional crew (only 5 cameras), to see how it would translate to TV.
This past Saturday, Ian Brown, published an article in the Globe and Mail, covering
The Tango, squash and doubles in general, and Gary Waite in particular. It is a
great read! Check it out:
The sweet THWOCK! of success.
The Globe and Mail web page also has an entertaining video covering the exhibition match, and its filming.

Yoga This Week
2009.05.11 17:19
This is a reminder that yoga is happening
once a week for the time being, and is being led by guest instructor
Laura Krown.
Laura is one of Canada's most experienced
yoga teachers. In over thirty years of teaching yoga, she has
streamlined her approach to make yoga very safe and easy for anyone
to do, even people who think they could never do yoga, and would
not normally attempt to even try it. Laura now teaches mainly older
adults and people with special needs, but she still loves to also share
her gentle approach to yoga with more athletic types, and guarantees a
well-balanced whole body workout in each one hour class, reducing the
accumulated tensions in the body to allow greater ease of movement and
a wider range of motion, which also helps prevent sports injuries.
You will be surprised by how much you could
learn in just one session, and among the many benefits that have made
yoga so popular, it could also help improve your game. For just a ten
dollar drop-in fee, you will have the chance to receive the benefit of
her considerable professional experience in a class small enough to

Help with Young Adult Drop-in
2009.03.28 15:01
As you may know, we have started running a Young Adult Drop-in on Thursday nights at 9pm for members and guests, targetting the 19 - 30ish age bracket. We have found some success, but do require help in making this program work. The time commitments are very minimal.
1) Program Coordinator – big title, small job: Weekly job is to ensure that courts are booked, the word is out there, and that there are program hosts coming that week. It can be done over your Monday morning coffee break…
2) Program Hosts — to prevent having a volunteer being required to come week–in, week–out — we are looking for a number of program hosts to commit to coming to the drop–in once every 4–5 weeks. Ideally with a partner — so you can just have your regular squash game, and ensure that new members have someone to hit with. You don't have to be 25 for this either! Just a willingness to hit with young adults, and maybe teach them some of your skill & cunning!
Both of these are small commitments that will go a long way in ensuring the success of our club. Please contact info@evergreensquash.com if you are interested.
Thank you,
Adam
